Each morning the flood line climbs higher. Soil turns to mud as banks are swallowed like breakfast. The river is in flood. At midday, silence echoes. A line for the eye to rest on. At dusk the colours turn lavender hues. Then midnight dawns. Now, the ghostly gums can dance.
In Flood is a series of stylised paintings that attempt to capture the essence of the Yarra’s (Birrarung) seasonal flood. The flood is both a gentle and a forceful thing. A creator and destroyer. A teacher of paradoxes. ‘In Flood’ traces the rise and fall of this body of water.
