Using the 1950 Japanese psychological thriller film Rashomon as a jumping off point, Odd Hours explores how people can experience and recall the same incident in contradictory, oft self-serving, ways. Through the powerful performance art of Butoh, Yumi Umiumare and collaborators Emma Bathgate (vocal artist), Jacqui Stockdale (visual artist) and Dan West (sound artist) will work with masks, collage, sound and movement to create a site-specific, illusionary work investigating subjectivity and individual notions of abnormality.

Embracing the inclusive ethos of New Ab/Normal, this production will involve performers of all levels and abilities, amplifying diverse voices in contemporary dance and theatre in Melbourne.

Reviews

“Umiumare [has] created a unique expression of Butoh that’s become part of Melbourne’s cultural currency…emotion made physical.”
ArtsHub on ButohOut’s Colour Fool

“The overall colourful effect is simultaneously striking and shocking. ”
– Stage Whispers on ButohOut’s Colour Fool

“Yumi Umiumare and the ButohOUT! ensemble elegantly place, embrace, displace and reinstate their audience in and out of layered worlds from the box office till the bow.”
– Australian Stage on ButohOut’s Colour Fool

“Colour-Fool is a nightmare reflection on the strangeness of the times, but it is also, in its quieter moments, an earnest celebration of otherness and abnormality.”
